Mass production and batch production are being increasingly used in industry. This requires facilities to be provided to ensure rapid and accurate machining of the work. Besides choosing correct type of cutting tools so that high cutting speeds may be used, there is also need for correct jigs and fixtures for accurate production.
In general, a jig is a work-holding device with bushes or guides for the cutting tools, whereas a fixture is a work- holding device without provision for guiding the tools. It can be said that mainly jigs are used for drilling and boring operations, while for milling, shaping or planing operations, fixtures have to be used.
Advantages: The use of jigs and fixtures provide the following advantages:
- The parts can be produced interchangeably.
- The production capacity can be increased.
- The machining accuracy and production quality can be increased.
- Semi-skilled operators can be employed
- inspection can be reduced.
- The overall production cost can be reduced.
JIG
It is a device, which is used in mass production to hold the job in position and at the same time guide the cutting tool. It is generally adopted for drilling and boring. Bushes, which guide the tool, are generally made of tool steel. Depending upon the job, various types of jigs are used.
Elements of a Jig: Generally a jig consists of the following elements:
- Body: It is the main part of a jig, which helps in holding the other parts.
- Locating Elements: These elements are used to provide proper location to the job which is fixed on the body of the jig.
- Clamping Elements: These elements are used to clamp the job against the cutting forces of the tool.
- Guiding Elements: Generally bushings are used as guiding elements, which guide the cutting tool during operation.
Miscellaneous Elements: Generally screws, pins, locknuts etc. are the miscellaneous elements, which are used for fastening the different parts of the jig.
